Sheila Araullo
Sheila graduated in 1995 from UP Diliman with a BS Mathematics
(cum laude) and an MS Applied Mathematics (Actuarial Science) in 2000. In 2005,
she and her husband Jojo landed in Canada after four years in Florida. Sheila
is currently working as Marketing Manager at Integral Financial Services Inc.,
a company she joined in January 2008. She reports directly to the President of
the company and works on the insurance side of the business.
Says Sheila: “Insurance is really my field, and I'm glad I was able to find work related to it. On top of that, there's opportunity for growth, constant challenges that make work interesting, and a healthy work environment.” Eventually she plans to take Actuarial exams to get accreditation.
(Stork news: Sheila and Jojo are expecting their first baby around July 23rd. Advance congratulations to the proud parents!)

Rafael (Ray) Aberin

Ray is a member of batch 1992 from UP Diliman, where he
obtained a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree. He became a Canadian
resident in March 2009. With his BC teaching credentials and five years’ teaching
experience in Orange County, it’s not surprising that Ray has found a niche in
the Canadian educational system – he will begin teaching Senior Math at John
Oliver Secondary in Vancouver on July 4th.
Finding a home in a new homeland

UPAABC warmly welcomes new member Janet Orito Lu, who moved to Canada almost four years ago. She holds a BSBA Marketing degree from UP Diliman and is looking forward to getting to know more of her fellow alumni.
Janet shares her thoughts on her new life in Canada.
When I moved from Manila to Baguio, twenty-eight years ago, I kept saying this is it. "I love Baguio ". I thought I was able to run away from all the traffic, pollution and flooded streets of Manila. Life was so beautiful and progressive in Baguio.
When I arrived in Vancouver in September 2007, I fell in love with the flowers, colourful trees and the lovely seawall and Ambleside beach in West Vancouver. I said to myself, this is "the place where I want to grow old gracefully ". Indeed, I had learned to love the place, specially the beautiful sceneries of the Vancouver islands.
I changed my life style immediately and adopted myself pretty fast in the community. I had been doing volunteer work since I came and up to now in various seniors’ homes and recreation centres. Through the years, I also gained a lot of Caucasian friends (mostly seniors) in West Vancouver, where I live. I eat healthy food -- lots of fruits, nuts, berries, vegetables, fish and minimal rice. I walk with friends along the seawall quite often and do a lot of walking everyday (which I never used to do in the Philippines).
I met one of my high school and UP colleagues, and through her, I found my church and my Filipino-Chinese community. At that time, we could not find the UP group. I found UPAABC only last February 2011, after attending a conference of the Filipino-Chinese Association in Vancouver, where I met Jun Cortes who endorsed me to Gigi Cagampan.
Just by talking to Gigi, Vilma Battad, Bert Quibuyen and Mary Tecson, I already felt part of the group. I was so happy to be a part of and become a member of the UPAABC. It's like being home again. I felt like I am back in the Diliman campus. I am able to relate with and talk to the UP breed again.
Being nostalgic, I am able to recall our Mr. Oblation, the AS steps (tambayan), the sunken garden, the main library, riding "Ikot" every day, Vinzons Hall (where I would line up for lunch). I stayed in the UP campus for four memorable years at a time when UP was all in chaos before and after the Martial Law era.
