UPAABC and PCG Vancouver celebrate Balagtasan anew

With the theme, “The Philippine Language in Song, Serenade, Debate, Poetry, and Dance – 8th Chapter (Harana, Kundiman, Balagtasan, Tula, at Sayawan – Ikawalong Yugto), the University of the Philippines in British Columbia (UPAABC), in partnership with the Philippine Consulate in Vancouver, held its traditional annual event of the Balagtasan to celebrate “Buwan ng Wika” once more.

The event kicked off with an enlivening “La Jota” dance number from the Philippine Consulate Vancouver. Next performance was a mesmerizing rendition of “Dahil Sa Iyo” and Paru-Parong Bukid” by the Holy Cross Regional High School Choir, a Catholic senior high school group based in Surrey. They were performing for UPAABC the first time and are expected to execute anew in the coming years.

The highlight of the program, Balagtasan, had the theme, “Bakit Mahal Pa Rin Kita, Pilipinas?” that conveyed the current realities of Filipinos living abroad, to which debaters argued on the “whys” and “hows” of showing love for the Philippines while living a more quality life away from its nest. In the end, audience participation decided that “to love the Philippines with full-cycle idealism is impossible while the mother land never delivered expectations, especially on the issue of financial stability.”

The much-awaited singing number, “Harana”, has given much joy to the audience as Friends, Apothic, and Music (FAM), a group that also hails from the University of the Philippines, gave the traditional version of Harana a modern twist by performing Filipino love and dance songs from the 1970s.

This year’s celebration of UPAABC’s and PCG Vancouver’s Balagtasan wrapped up by singing “Ako ay Pilipino” and with a simple dinner prepared for sponsors, performers, and guests.

In celebration of our shared ocean and the launch of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, the University of Victoria Faculty of Fine Arts and Ocean Networks Canada present...

"Gossip with Whales: Exploring Ocean Science through Applied Theatre"

Join us for this unique live event and world premiere performance of 4 new choral compositions, Corals Crawl, To the Pacific, Gossip with Whales and Bamboo Stilts. Inspired and guided by applied theatre director and UVic PhD graduate Dennis Gupa—the current ONC/Fine Arts Artist-in-Residence—this event is the fruition of a unique collaboration between ocean science and the arts, which has drawn on Tanaga, a Filipino traditional lyrical artform, and insights into current challenges for our oceans collected during his time at ONC.

Dennis, along with a panel of artists, performers and scientists, will share the stories and meanings behind these interdisciplinary compositions. You will be invited to participate by sharing your impressions of each new original composition. You will also be able to submit your comments and questions to shape the discussion.

The ocean has many songs to sing. Join us for this feast of music and celebration!

Here is a short clip on what Dennis has done through his being an artist-in-residence of Ocean Networks Canada.
For inquiries, contact Dennis Gupa at dennis.gupa@seachs.org

Mga Isko at Iska!

Get it while its is hot! We mean, the sunshine!

Join us for this year's PHOTOLAKAD 2017. Photolakad is a UPAABC activity that aims to bring us together and enjoy an activity we all love - KODAKAN!📸

We will meet at the A-maze-ing Laughter Statues at Morton Park near English Bay at 10 AM, on August 5, Saturday, and photograph our way to Granville Island where we will finish our trip.

THEME: VANCOUVER SEAWALL IMAGES IN COLOUR
Picture
Photos will be taken from the Seawall, like scenery, structures such as buildings, Science World, Inukshuk, laughing statues, people, etc.

A good photographic image will always stand out among different categories. For example - a toddler trying to catch a ball and laughing like crazy, elderly couple holding hands while watching the scenery, a paddle boater dwarfed by a monster tanker, stone formations on the seawall, the crowd of shoppers in Granville Market, dragon boaters with Science World behind them, etc. We will consider these examples as copyrighted, so you have to think of your own images! :-)

There are plenty of photo opportunities on the Photolakad route. You just have to use your eyes and be creative.

Winners will be chosen by our distinguished UPAABC founders and respected artists and will be presented during our Christmas Party and AGM on November 25, 2017 at Van Dusen Gardens. Winners get a print copy of their work, as well as bragging rights! 😎

Tito Bert Quibuyen is Chief Organizer of this activity. Thanks Tito Bert!

See you all there

Lettie Arboleda, Mayo Landicho, Alex Anayas, Gng Anita Aguirre-Nieveras at ang New Life Dancers ni Aida Canonigo at Irene Nazaire Aquino.

Dios mabalos!

 Mabuhay ang pag-asa  ng bayan

Push On, UP

Push On, UP

Push on UP and go in to win
Push on UP and fight
May works and deeds keep you in the  lead
Push on to vict’ry with all your might
Loyal and true we’re always with you
Push when the game goes hard
From east or west we know you’re the best
Push on to vict’ry, rah! Rah! Rah!
Rise Rise UP, we’ll always stand by you
Go on UP! We’ll ever cheer and cheer for you to
Win, win, UP! Our hearts will ever yearn
For the maroon adn green banner waving high for UP
Varsity, Varsity, hit them high and low
Varsity, Varsity, always on the go
UP rah! UP rah! UP sis-boom-bah!

UP Beloved

UP Beloved, thou Alma Mater Dear
For thee united, our joyful voices hear
Far tho’ we wander, o’er islands  yonder
Loyal thy sons we’ll ever be
Loyal thy sons we’ll ever be

Echo the watchword, the Red and Green forever
Give out the password to the Hall of Brave sons rare
Sing forth the message, ring out with courage
All hail, thou hope of our dear land
All hail, thou hope of our dear land

Tee time brings out golfing talents of UPians and guests

6/6/2011

Congratulations to our guest golfers who won the major prizes at the Fun Golf Tournament on June 6, 2011 at the Queen Elizabeth pitch-and-putt course.Alfredo Moreno scored 2 over par to beat our very own Nezz Navasero by 2 strokes in the men's division.

In the ladies' division, Vita played an almost bogey round to best UP's Abby Tumbocon by 3 strokes.

However, it was the UP alumni who figured prominently in the fun category with Tom Firme and Ruby Cortes earning the most prolific golfer awards in their respective divisions. This only shows that UPians definitely know how to have fun!

We were honored by the presence of Bella Cenezero, Program Director of Parent Support Services (PSS) Society of BC, who was very appreciative of being chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the tournament. During the awards ceremonies, Bella talked about the activities of PSS and emphasized that the funds raised will go a long way in supporting the Filipino families’ circle of PSS.

QE Club Manager Vicky Goodwin was also very pleased to have been given the opportunity to host our golf tournament and looks forward to having more events from UPAABC in the future.

The tournament was made possible by the sponsorship from Ruben Versoza, Dwelling Place (c/o Aurel/Ching Muego), Vancity (c/o Ruby Cortes), Tony Somera, and Nestor/Evelyn Navasero.

Special thanks go to Gigi Cagampan and Fe Alluri for taking charge of the logistics, prizes and refreshments. Big hand to Jun Esquejo for being our official photographer and to Del Gachallan for manning the registration table. Kudos to Ruby Cortes for soliciting giveaways, Evelyn Navasero for lending a hand with the refreshments and Nezz Navasero for organizing this tournament!

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

4/5/2011

Hi everyone!

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is coming up in a couple of weeks. Check out their website at www.tulipfestival.org for information.

It's an easy drive from Vancouver and once you get there, you'll be rewarded with endless vistas of colorful tulips in many different varieties. After taking in the tulips, on your way back home you can either have dinner at Tulalip Casino (farther south on I-5) or at Silver Reef Casino just south of Bellingham. By the way, if you're into shopping, there's a factory outlet mall next to Tulalip Casino.
