Mentoring Program
UPAABC believes in the impact of coaching or mentoring in the career development of individuals, who are immigrating or new to Canada, returning to work, graduating students, or anybody who is in the process of transitioning into the Canadian workforce. Individuals who successfully transition say that there were one or more people who helped them, and gave them inspiration and confidence to pursue their dreams.
Mentors are those considered experienced in the identified field and are willing to support the career development of mentees. For mentors, mentorship enhances their communication, leadership and coaching skills. Best of all, they get the opportunity to experience feelings of satisfaction in making a difference in the lives of individuals when they see them progress, get closer to reaching or when they achieve their career goals.
Expectations
For those wanting to get mentored, it is important that they have a clear understanding of what is expected from them and from the mentor. Mentors are there to provide valuable knowledge about the labour market, the occupation, industry, Canadian workplace culture and practices relevant to their career. A mentor helps them clarify and create realistic career goals. They are not there to provide jobs.
Both mentors and mentees are expected to commit a minimum of 2 hours per month of career interaction with each other. The interaction may be in-person, by phone, or online. Prior to the meeting, both will be provided more detailed information about mentorship. They are to provide basic information in the online application to enable a better career match.
