2nd UPAABC Pinoy workers' workshop set May 12
The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of British Columbia (UPAABC) has announced the holding of the second in a series of seminar-workshops for the Filipino-Canadian community in the province. The workshop, titled "Options and Opportunities for Workers in Transition," will be held on May 12, Saturday, 4-8 p.m., at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House at 5288 Joyce Street, Vancouver.
It is being organized by UPAABC in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, and is supported by I-Remit Global Remittance Services and G-Air Cargo Services.
Eric Inigo, UPAABC president, expects another good turnout for this workshop, judging from the standing-room-only (SRO) crowd and the feedback from the first edition, held last February 5 at the Metrotown Center, in Burnaby.
Meanwhile, Philippine Consul General Jose Ampeso, a staunch advocate of Filipino workers' rights and welfare, said the Consulate General is in full support of the activity because it greatly complements the work it is doing in assisting Filipino nationals overseas. “The topics are very relevant, and Filipinos in B.C., especially the temporary workers, will greatly benefit from the information, advice and insights shared,” he said.
This second workshop will zero in on the following topics "Immigration: Issues and Options," to be discussed by Rey Leblanc of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC); "Getting Ready to Transition," presented by Mary Tecson of Immigrant Services Society of BC and Agnes Tecson; and "Frequently Encountered Issues by Temporary Foreign Workers," to be handled byVice Consul Melanie Diano and Labor Attache Bernardino Julve.
It will be open to the public, but UPAABC urges participants to register early, as seats are limited. Interested parties may register online at www.upaabc.org, or contact up.alumni.association.bc@gmail.com for details.

When there's a Will, there's Peace of Mind
10Mar2012 - The Workshop on Wills and Estates was a full house at the Metrotown Community Room. Margot Lorayes, an Associate at Cassady and Company, Barristers and Solicitors, outlined 10 good reasons why one should have a will. The distribution of your assets will be determined by the government (under the Estate Administration Act) which may not necessarily be according to your wishes. She also advised individuals should consider drawing up a separate will if they own properties outside BC (and especially outside Canada).
There were 53 UP alumni and friends who attended the workshop and practically peppered the resource speakers with wide-ranging questions. Margot also addressed the question on living will where she explained that this has now been replaced by a legally binding representation agreement that sets out the wishes of the individual regarding their critical health care issues. She advised the workshop participants to consider their particular circumstances before relying on online or will kits.
The workshop was followed by the usual fellowship over coffee and food. Door prizes courtesy of Ruby Cortes and VanCity were given out to members from Batches ‘76-’80 which had the biggest turnout with 11. It is worth noting that there were 2 members from Batch ‘50s, including Ruben Verzosa, the founding President of UPAABC. Prizes were also handed out to Fremma Esquejo, Luis Pedroso and Evelyn Navasero for having attended at least 5 activities of the association in the last 18 months. Lerie Canlas took home the $375 gift certificate offered by Cassady and Company that can go towards the preparation of a will.

UPAABC, Philippine Consulate hold successful orientation for temporary foreign workers
By Bert Quibuyen
_ The first UPAABC-sponsored orientation seminar for newly
arrived temporary foreign workers (TFWs) was held February 5th at
the Metrotown Community Centre in Burnaby and was packed out, with over 70
participants including TFWs, the Philippine media, Philippine consulate staff,
immigration consultants and representatives from Western Union.
"The Philippine Consulate General strongly supports this seminar, which we hope will give workers more knowledge of their rights and whatever is due them financially and otherwise,” Philippine Consul-General in Vancouver, Jose Ampeso, said in his opening remarks. “It would also inform them of their obligations and duties as workers for the present and perhaps as prospective Canadian residents or citizens in the future.”
A joint effort of UPAABC, the Philippine Consulate General and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO), the idea of a seminar first came up in a casual conversation between Con-Gen Ampeso and UPAABC President Eric Inigo last summer. The two agreed that holding a workshop would be an excellent way to promote the welfare of Filipino TFWs, and a working committee was created to get things started.
